The Sultan Ahmet Mosque
- Known as the SultanAhmet, or the  The "Blue Mosque" -

(
SultanAhmet is also the name given the historic area of the peninsula bordering the Golden Horn, the site of ancient Byzantium)

The Sultan Ahmet Mosque was built in 1609 on the site of the palace of the Ottoman emperors, facing the Hagia Sophia and the hippodrome.

The SultanAhmet has six minarets, reputedly because the Sultan Ahmed, its builder, wanted it to be grander than the Sophia Basilica which has four (but is larger).
